This Month's Studio Rumble: Best Reality TV Show

Tribester Opinions

I'm not a big fan of reality shows as it seems it has become the networks way of coming up with cheap production thus killing creative ventures in entertainment. The one show I do like is found on the BBC and is called the Dragon's Den.

The premise five successful British and American and business leaders whoÕve been there and done that, listen to pitches from would be entrepreneurs. If an idea seems solid potential rewards are substantial financial investments in the concept or company by the Dragons.

The pressure of the pitch in the den can get very personal and be ruthless but the Dragons can also sniff out a diamond in the rough and recognize an idea with that extra something special. They have the power to make dreams come true, and if they like the idea theyÕll invest money from their own pockets. Emotions run high and life-changing moments unfold as real business deals take place on camera.

Well there is quite a slew of these shows to choose from in all it various genes (behind the scenes, competitions, documentary) that in some case it's a hard to say what qualifies as "reality".

That being said I am more inclined towards the competition type shows and my selection form among this group is "The Amazing Race". Basically teams of two compete in a race around the world as they are sent to various countries and have engage in challenges related to the local cultures. They also need to navigate their way around using various clues while dealing with the language and cultural barriers. The stress of the situations and the resulting tension that it brings between the team members (husbands/wives, boyfriend/girlfriend, brother/sister) makes for some compelling drama. Also the fact they the teams are sent to some incredible places away from the typical 'tourist" destinations make for interesting viewing.

This is the true story... of seven strangers... picked to live in a house...work together and have their lives taped... to find out what happens... when people stop being polite... and start getting real...The Real World.

If it wasn't the first, it was the show that brought reality TV to the masses, especially in the first few years of it's existence. Yes, it had a car-crash-esque quality about it, but the voyeuristic look into the lives of such luminaries as Eric, Julie, Norman, Kevin, Dom, Jon, Beth, Pedro, Puck, Rachel and even Flora was always entertaining television. To this day, everything else is simply building on what The Real World started.

None. I have yet to sit through any for more than three minutes. I've also never been to Ikea.

After an office poll my initial choice was ruled out as a reality show, which I still disagree with. So, instead of choosing Top Chef I am forced to reveal one of my guilty pleasures in life and pick The Girls Next Door on E!. I'm sure my reasons for liking this show are very different than my husbands but we both find it equally entertaining. It is one of the few reality shows sans drama as all the girls get along and play unique roles at the mansion. The main reason I like this program is because the Playboy girls are not pencil thin, do not excessively workout, and will often be shown eating full meals or even (gasp!) a complex carbohydrate.
